Important Find of the Tomb of a Queen Known From Texts

A team that includes David Freidel has uncovered the tomb of Lady K’abel at the site of El Peru-Waka in Guatemala. She is Lady K’abel, a seventh-century Maya Holy Snake Lord. There is a white alabaster bowl in the burial with glyphs indicating the Lady, along with other vessels and a stela that further point to Lady K’abel. She ruled with her husband, K’inich Bahlam, from 672-692 CE. She was of the dynastic house of the Snake King, and her title means Supreme Warrior. She is also commemorated on Stela 34 of El Peru-Waka, which is in the Cleveland Art Museum.

Washington University News has the story, photos and drawings here.
